May in Dhaka means mango season. But every summer, through her years of practice at Bangladesh Shishu Hospital & Institute (BSH&I) and now at the Children's Gastroliver Center, Dr. Rafia Rashid sees a familiar pattern: a sharp increase in children suffering from sudden stomach cramps and loose motion.

Mangoes are packed with vitamins, but they must be introduced to your toddler's diet carefully. Here is your action plan for letting your child enjoy mangoes safely.

1. Portion Control: Stop the Sugar Overload

Mangoes are incredibly high in natural sugars and fiber. When a young child eats too many mangoes at once, their small digestive system cannot handle the sudden overload. This is the primary cause of summer "mango diarrhea."

The Rule: Treat mangoes as a measured dessert, not a full meal. Do not let your child eat two or three whole mangoes in one sitting. Give a few small slices alongside their regular afternoon snack.

2. The 30-Minute Soak

In our local markets, fruits are often treated with preservatives or ripening chemicals that can upset a child's stomach.

The Rule: Always soak mangoes in a bowl of clean, plain water for at least 30 minutes before peeling or cutting them. This simple step helps remove surface chemicals and dirt.

3. Monitor and Pause

Every child's digestion is different. When you first give your child mangoes this season, watch their stool for the next 24 hours. If they develop loose motion, pause the mangoes for a few days and focus on plain water and regular meals until their tummy settles.

A Safe Summer of '26

The summer of 2026 should be filled with sweet memories, not stomach aches. By practicing simple portion control and proper washing, you can let your little ones safely enjoy the best fruits Dhaka has to offer. Enjoy the summer with caution, and remember—if your child's tummy troubles do not settle down, our center is always here to help.
