Every week at the Children’s Gastroliver Center, we receive heartfelt messages like this: "Doctor, we live quite far from the center and have all my child's recent test reports ready. Since traveling is difficult, can we just do the first consultation online?"
Saying "no" to an anxious parent is the hardest part of our job. We completely understand the physical and financial stress of traveling through Dhaka traffic with a sick child. However, when it comes to pediatric gastroenterology, Dr. Rafia Rashid has a strict, non-negotiable rule: For new patients, or new health issues, the first consultation must be in-person.
Here is why we refuse to compromise on this standard of care.
We Treat Children, Not Test Reports
Lab reports, ultrasounds, and X-rays are incredibly valuable, but they are only half the story. A piece of paper can tell us if a liver enzyme is high, but it cannot tell us why.
To get an accurate diagnosis, a pediatric gastroenterologist must do physical detective work:
- The Abdominal Exam: The doctor must physically press (palpate) the child's stomach. Is the pain sharp or dull? Is the liver slightly enlarged? Does the child pull away when a specific spot is touched? An ultrasound cannot replace the trained hands of a specialist.
- The Silent Clues: Children often cannot describe their pain accurately. A doctor needs to see the child's overall energy level, check their skin tone for subtle signs of jaundice or anemia, and observe their breathing.
- The Real Conversation: Sitting face-to-face allows the doctor to ask deep, spontaneous questions about the child's diet and history—details that are almost impossible to capture over a rushed WhatsApp text or a spotty video call.
The Danger of "Online Guessing"
If a doctor prescribes heavy medication based solely on a lab report sent over WhatsApp, they are making an educated guess. In pediatric care, guessing is dangerous. A wrong diagnosis delays the real treatment and can put the child’s safety at risk.
Our Promise: Safety First, Convenience Second
We value your time, but we value your child's life more.
- Step 1: The In-Person Visit. The primary diagnosis and physical examination must be in-person at our center.
- Step 2: WhatsApp Support for Follow-ups. Once we have seen your child for their current issue, we want to help you skip the traffic! You can send routine lab reports via WhatsApp, and Dr. Rafia will review them during her regular consultation hours. (Note: If a completely new health problem starts, we will need to see them in person again).
If your child is suffering from severe digestive, liver, or nutritional issues, do not settle for an online guess. Bring them in so we can give them the complete, dedicated care they deserve.
