Most parents in Bangladesh associate winter with colds and coughs. However, pediatricians often see a sharp spike in diarrhea cases during the cooler months (December–February).

Why does stomach trouble happen when it's cold? At the Children's Gastroliver Center, Dr. Rafia Rashid explains the 5 key reasons behind this "Winter Diarrhea" phenomenon in urban families.

1. The "Winter Virus" (Rotavirus)

The biggest culprit is Rotavirus. Unlike bacteria that love heat/humidity, Rotavirus thrives in cool, dry weather. It survives longer on surfaces (doorknobs, toys) in winter, making it the #1 cause of severe diarrhea in children under 5.

2. Urban Life & Close Contact

In urban Dhaka, winter means windows are closed, and children spend more time indoors.

  • The Risk: In compact apartments, siblings play closer together. Viruses spread rapidly via shared toys, playmats, and TV remotes.

3. The "Cold Water" Hygiene Gap

This is a hidden reason often overlooked. On cold winter mornings, especially before the school rush, children (and adults) naturally avoid touching freezing tap water.

  • The Result: Handwashing becomes shorter or is skipped entirely after using the toilet or before eating. This slight drop in hygiene allows the virus to enter the mouth.

4. The "Double Trouble" Immunity Dip

Winter is also flu season. When a child catches a common cold or flu, their immune system is temporarily distracted or weakened. This "immunity dip" makes it easier for stomach bugs to take hold at the same time.

5. Vaccine Gaps

While many children have received the Rotavirus vaccine, protection is not always 100%.

  • Missed Doses: Some children may have missed a scheduled dose.
  • Mild Infections: Even vaccinated children can get a mild version of the virus.

Prevention Tips from Dr. Rafia

  1. Warm Water: If possible, use warm water for handwashing to encourage kids to wash longer.
  2. Disinfect Toys: Wipe down shared remotes and toys.
  3. Vaccinate: Check if your child's Rotavirus schedule is complete.
  4. ORS is Key: If diarrhea starts, immediate ORS (Saline) is the treatment.
